There are many positives associated with gambling, including the socialization it provides and its psychological benefits, such as reducing stress and improving concentration. Additionally, gambling releases endorphins in the brain which can enhance a person’s mood and help them relax.
The negatives of gambling are also known, and include the possibility of becoming a problem gambler, which can cause serious harm to the individual, their family, and friends. Some of these negatives include financial and emotional distress, as well as a loss of self-esteem and self-confidence.
People who suffer from a gambling problem may also have poor social skills and have difficulty making and keeping friends. They can also have a hard time controlling their finances and are often preoccupied with their money worries.
When gambling becomes a habit, it can lead to serious consequences such as addiction and bankruptcy. There is also the possibility that someone who has a gambling problem will lose their job or other important relationships, such as their partner.
The impacts of gambling on the society are a topic for much debate and have been examined using a variety of approaches. One approach involves estimating monetary costs and benefits to understand the economic impact of gambling. This method is commonly used in alcohol and drug research, but does not account for the nonmonetary social impacts of gambling.
It is therefore important to study gambling impacts on multiple levels and to observe the external effects of gambling on others, such as friends, family members, and work colleagues. This is particularly true in examining the economic impacts of gambling, as the effects of increased debt and financial strain can affect other members of the community. The impacts of escalating into bankruptcy and homelessness can have long-term effects, affecting family members, and may even pass between generations.
In addition, the interpersonal and community/society level impacts of gambling may be difficult to study because they are based on personal feelings and beliefs, which are not readily quantifiable. These impacts can also be more prone to bias because the person being impacted by the gambling is not usually aware of them.
To address these challenges, we developed a conceptual model for assessing the impacts of gambling on the society. This model provides a base for the development of common methodology to measure these impacts.
First, we need to understand the different ways in which gambling impacts can be observed on a personal, interpersonal and community/society level (Fig. 1).
Among the personal impacts of gambling are those affecting the gambler’s mental health and well-being, such as depression or suicidal thoughts. Moreover, this can lead to a loss of confidence and a change in personality. The impacts of gambling can also affect a person’s work and career performance, leading to a loss of productivity.
